Interannual variability in western US precipitation

چکیده
Low-frequency (interannual or longer period) climatic variability is of interest, because of its significance for the understanding and prediction of protracted climatic anomalies. Since precipitation is one of the key variables driving various hydrologic processes, it is useful to examine precipitation records to better understand long-term climate dynamics. Here, we use the multi-taper method of spectral analysis to analyze the monthly precipitation time series (both occurrence and amount) at a few stations along a meridional transect from Priest River, ID to Tucson, AZ. We also examine spectral coherence between monthly precipitation and widely used atmospheric indices, such as the central Northern Pacific (CNP) and southern oscillation index (SOI). This analysis reveals statistically significant ‘signals’ in the time series in the 5–7 and 2–3 year bands. These interannual signals are consistent with those related to El-Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) and quasi-biennial variability identified by others. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. North–South Precipitation Patterns in Western North America on Interannual-to-Decadal Timescales
The overall amount of precipitation deposited along the West Coast and western cordillera of North America from 258 to 558N varies from year to year, and superimposed on this domain-average variability are varying north–south contrasts on timescales from at least interannual to interdecadal. In order to better understand the north–south precipitation contrasts, their interannual and decadal var...

This study was performed to examine the relationship between isotopic composition in near-surface vapor (δOv) over western Africa during the monsoon season and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity using the Isotope-incorporated Global Spectral Model. The model was evaluated using a satellite and in situ observations at daily to interannual timescales. The model provided an accurate simu...

Severe drought is a notable feature of the hydrology of Central Southwest (CSW) Asia. Although studies have linked the region’s interannual precipitation variability to remote forcings that include East Asia Jet Stream variability and Western Pacific tropical convection, atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) forced by observed sea surface temperatures demonstrate little skill in simulat...
متن کاملAssessing the impact of interannual variability of precipitation and potential evaporation on evapotranspiration
The impact of interannual variability of precipitation and potential evaporation on the long-term mean annual evapotranspiration as well as on the interannual variability of evapotranspiration is studied using a stochastic soil moisture model within the Budyko framework. Results indicate that given the same long-term mean annual precipitation and potential evaporation, including interannual var...
متن کاملInterannual Variability of the Cyclonic Activity along the U.S. Pacific Coast: Influences on the Characteristics of Winter Precipitation in the Western United States
This study examines the observed interannual variability of the cyclonic activity along the U.S. Pacific coast and quantifies its impact on the characteristics of both the winter total and extreme precipitation in the western United States. A cyclonic activity function (CAF) was derived from a dataset of objectively identified cyclone tracks in 27 winters (1979/80–2005/06). The leading empirica...
